Where should we direct our Social Media campaigns?

Thanks to an email I received from SmartBrief on Social Media ( I recommend you sign up ), I saw this study on the objectives that companies have when interacting on Social Networks. Read interacting as Marketing Actions, Communication Actions, Commercial Actions, etc…
When asked whether the campaigns carried out on social networks were aimed at obtaining potential contacts or creating direct sales, the results were as follows:
Social Media Goals
The highest percentage represents 36% of the total fantuan data respondents and corresponds to "nothing", neither potential commercial contacts nor direct sales. On the other hand, 30% answered that they are focused on obtaining potential commercial contacts and direct sales. The other two results do not show that 23% were oriented towards obtaining potential commercial contacts and 9% towards direct sales.
So where should we focus our Social Media campaigns?
The presence of a company on social media must be a reflection (and be conditioned) by its general strategy. For example, a very secretive company in a sector with a lot of industrial espionage, of gigantic size... seems far from participating in public conversations with its target and stakeholders on social media, don't you think? As in many aspects, common sense will guide our role on social media.
On the other hand, if the company's strategy is based on customer-oriented service/marketing, in which it is necessary to be in permanent contact with your target audiences and, in turn, generate more leads, it seems clear that the orientation in Social Networks will be similar.
In this way, by understanding the starting position, the path to follow, the resources we have available and, above all, the objective set, we will participate correctly (and corporately) in Social Networks.
