Whether your email marketing is aimed at selling something or is more about staying in touch with your customers and strengthening your brand, segmenting your contacts is one of the most useful tools you should have in your toolbox. No matter what actions you are going to take or even what you have already taken, your campaigns should provide users with relevant and useful content. But while many email marketers try to learn more about their users through the statistics derived from their actions, some of them overlook an option – which is no less simple and powerful – to obtain data directly from users!

Know where to ask
The two most valuable places to ask users for information are the sign-up form and the notification confirming the sign-up. The first question users will ask themselves the minute you ask them for information is “What’s in it for me to answer all of this?”

With users becoming increasingly concerned about their privacy, you need to be very clear about how you are going to use this information – tell them very transparently what is in it for them. Because by providing you with the information you are asking for, they will have the opportunity to benefit from a better service because it will be tailored to them and not general.

Know what to ask
No matter how sophisticated you are, if you don't ask the right questions, it doesn't matter if you get the answers because they won't do you any good! The most important thing is to only ask for information that you want to use, and it's better if users can see how they'll benefit from it in the future, which will make it easier for them to provide it to you. For example, if you have no intention of sending personalized campaigns based on the age of the users, why are you asking for the age of your subscribers? If you don't plan on sending separate emails for men and women, why ask for the contact's gender? There's no point in getting information that will look great on your end-of-day power point presentation, only ask for relevant information and use it! Here are some details you can ask for:

Date of Birth : A classic question that will allow you to use the answer to send special offers and discounts on users' birthdays.

Preferred content : Do users want to receive special offers or do they prefer in-depth articles? And if they prefer articles, what topics would they like to read about?

Email Frequency : Try to find out your users' preferred email frequency, this way you may be able to increase the number of campaigns you send without risking an increase in your unsubscribe rate.

There are, of course, many more questions. It all depends on the type of campaigns you are sending and the effort you are willing to invest. Either way, if you are not yet ready to create personalized campaigns, you should ask yourself whether there is really a need to ask users for unnecessary information.
